Why are their different grades of stainless steel cutlery?

Posting date: 19th February 2010 14:53

Stainless steel cutlery can be 18/10 stainless steel (304 steel in the American classification system), which is the best, or lower grade such as 18/8 or 18/0. Usually cutlery with less than 18/10 is unlikely to publicise the fact. The Elia stainless steel cutlery that we sell as all 18/10.

The "18/10" means that the stainless steel contains 18% chromium, and 10% nickel. The more nickel, the more the steel resists corrosion. So don't pay a high price for 18/0 stainless steel, for example. The chromium component gives the shine to the metal.

Remember that even the best stainless steel can occassionally get stains on it that can usually be removed with a stainless steel cleaner.
